Sedation Dentistry

We offer Sedation Dentistry as an option for patients who have a fear of pain, needles or dental procedures, making them feel more relaxed and comfortable. Sedation Dentistry allows you to be sedated just enough to be unaware of your dental procedure, leaving you with little or no memory of the event. Since you are completely relaxed, we are able to correct, improve, or restore years of dental problems in fewer visits.

Nitrous Oxide/Laughing Gas

Bauer and Howard Dental Care offers a variety of sedation options, including Nitrous Oxide, otherwise known as Laughing Gas, to make you feel more comfortable. Nitrous Oxide is a colorless, odorless gas that, when breathed in, kills pain and provides a euphoric feeling. It's easily administered through a mask, reaches the brain in 20 seconds, and takes 2-3 minutes for the relaxing effect to begin. The effects are short-lived after administration of the gas ends, and the patient can usually drive home in relative safety.

Oral Sedation

We offer Sedation Dentistry as an option for patients who have a fear of pain, needles or dental procedures, making them feel more relaxed and comfortable. Sedation Dentistry allows you to be sedated just enough to be unaware of your dental procedure, leaving you with little or no memory of the event. Since you are completely relaxed, we are able to correct, improve, or restore years of dental problems in fewer visits. If you opt for Sleep Dentistry, you will be given a pill to help you relax, an hour prior to your appointment. This pill may make you drowsy, so we require a companion to accompany you to the office. Once you arrive, you will be comfortably seated in a cushioned dental chair made specifically for Sleep Dentistry. We will monitor your vital signs, while our clinical team cares for your dental needs. When your procedures are complete, your companion will take you home, where you will sleep an average of three to six additional hours.

Because you are completely relaxed, we can accomplish a lot of dental care in one or two visits. This also makes it beneficial to patients with busy schedules. You will need someone to drive you to and from our dental office, because the effects of oral sedation can last for several hours but will disappear within 24 hours. Deep Sedation and Minimal Conscious Sedation Dentistry differs from general anesthesia, since it does not put the patient totally to sleep and thus involves less risk.

Sedation dentistry may be the ideal solution for you if you have:

  • Fear of dental treatment
  • History of traumatic dental experiences
  • Difficulty getting numb
  • Very sensitive gag reflex or difficulty opening your mouth
  • Extremely sensitive teeth
  • Busy schedule
  • Complex dental problems
  • Embarrassment about teeth
  • Denial of dental problem until pain becomes unbearable
  • Have avoided dental care for years - even decades
  • Regularly make and cancel, dentist appointments
  • Experience sweaty palms or find yourself gripping the armrests of the dentist chair
  • You've had a bad experience at the dentist.
  • You dread going to the dentist for any reason.
  • You have difficulty keeping your mouth open.
  • You need a lengthy or invasive treatment.
  • Have you been putting off going to the dentist because you are too afraid that it might hurt or will take too long?

Minimal Conscious Sedation (Oral Sedation, Sleep Dentistry)

For some people going to the dentist is very frightening. Whether it was a bad experience as a child, an aversion to needles or some other issue, fear makes it difficult for them to take care of their dental needs. At Bauer and Howard Dental Care, we understand that these fears are real and that is why we offer "Oral Sedation Dentistry." Minimal Conscious Sedation Dentistry is done by taking a small pill 60 minutes before your dental appointment. It allows you to be sedated (about like sleep walking) just enough to be relaxed and comfortable through your dental treatment. Although it is very safe, your vital signs will be carefully monitored throughout your appointment. The purpose of moderate conscious sedation dentistry is to establish a calm and relaxed patient who is free of anxiety.

Because you are completely relaxed, we can accomplish a lot of dental care in one or two visits. This also makes it beneficial to patients with busy schedules.
