An extraction is the complete removal of a primary (baby) or permanent (adult) tooth. An extraction can be done as either a routine or a surgical procedure. A routine verses a surgical extraction depends on: the difficulty of the extraction, how badly the tooth is impacted or erupted, if it is infected by decay or its proximity to the nerves.
Extractions are required for a variety of reasons, including advanced gum disease, an abscessed tooth, a tooth that is too decayed to be saved, a tooth that has broken at the gum line, or an impacted tooth such as a wisdom tooth.
The space left open after an extraction must be occupied by a temporary or permanent bridge, an implant, or a complete or partial denture to keep your teeth from shifting and causing further complications.
In complicated cases, you may be referred to an Oral Surgeon.
Wisdom Teeth Removal
Bauer and Howard Dental Care offer wisdom teeth extractions, depending on the severity of your particular case. Patients with severely impacted wisdom teeth may be referred to an Oral Surgeon. If you are taking medications, this procedure will be delayed accordingly. We can provide "Sleep Dentistry" as an optional technique, to make you feel more relaxed and comfortable.
Not only can Wisdom Teeth be painful, they can also cause problems with the rest of your teeth. If not removed they can cause crowding, misalignment, position issues, and Ankylosis, which is caused when the roots of an impacted tooth fuse to the surrounding bone. It is in your best interest to remove your wisdom teeth as early as possible.
