Orthodontics

Straighten Your Smile

Orthodontics is the dental specialty that corrects improper bites and  displaced teeth. If left untreated, crooked teeth and improper jaw positioning can lead to tooth decay, periodontal disease, TMJ problems, and excessive tooth wear. It  can also affect your self-esteem.

When you come into either our Hastings or Doniphan office, our doctors will recommend the treatment that best fits your needs and expectations. Orthodontic care will improve oral health, enhance your appearance, and strengthen teeth, giving you a healthy smile to last a lifetime.

Who Can Get Orthodontic Care?

Our experienced team offers comprehensive orthodontic services for children, teens, and adults. This begins with an evaluation of your whole mouth. If you’re a candidate for orthodontics, we’ll provide you with a treatment plan including a timeline and cost estimate.

Orthodontic treatment is recommended for patients with several types of dental complications, including:

  • Overbite or underbite
  • Crossbite or open bite
  • Misplaced midline
  • Spacing
  • Crowding

Orthodontic Treatments at Hastings Family Dental

When it comes to orthodontic care at Hastings Family Dental, we offer metal braces. But many of our patients prefer to straighten their smile with clear aligners from Invisalign.

Whether you choose clear or metal braces, our doctors will shift your teeth to the perfect position so your smile will look just right.

Traditional Metal Braces

The most common treatment, metal braces, are a set of bonded brackets, archwires, and elastic bands that work over a period of time to shift your teeth. Braces are adjusted regularly to deliver your expected outcome. Once the teeth are properly aligned, a fixed or adjustable retainer is often used to keep them in place until they’ve completely settled.

Invisalign

If traditional braces don’t fit your lifestyle, we offer Invisalign as an effective alternative. These clear aligners are much less noticeable than metal wires. We use state-of-the-art digital imaging to customize your trays so they fit comfortably in your mouth. Invisalgin gradually fixes your smile. Best of all, you can remove them at any time, allowing you to eat whatever you want.

Adults Can Get Braces Too

Braces aren’t just for children — more and more adults are learning about the cosmetic benefits of braces. They’ll enhance your oral health as well. We offer braces that are smaller and a lot less noticeable than they were in the past. The elastic bands we use come in bright colors for kids or inconspicuous clear styles that are preferred by teens and adults.

FAQs

How long do I have to wear braces?

In most cases, patients are typically required to wear braces for 18 months to three years for effective, lasting results. However, the length it takes to complete orthodontic treatment is different for each patient and the number of issues corrected. During your initial consultation, our doctors will provide you with a personalized treatment plan including an accurate timeline.

How do I take care of my teeth while wearing braces?

No matter what type of braces you’re wearing, always remember to brush your teeth with a toothpaste containing fluoride after every meal to remove debris that could otherwise cause cavities. It’s also recommended to floss at least once a day.

Rinsing daily with fluoridated mouthwash is another thing you can do to help prevent cavities. You can also reduce your chances of developing cavities by avoiding foods with lots of sugar, especially sticky and chewy foods that might get stuck in your braces.

Are Invisalign aligners painful?

Invisalign clear aligners are custom-made to each patient’s unique bite for a perfect fit and maximum comfort. You may experience mild discomfort while wearing your first set of aligners, as your teeth begin to shift and become accustomed to them. However, this should subside within a few days and can be relieved with an over-the-counter pain medication.

Am I a candidate for Invisalign treatment?

Invisalign is a great option for patients seeking a more discreet, convenient alternative for metal braces. They’re customized, clear aligners designed to fix a number of orthodontic issues, like crooked teeth or gaps in your smile. Invisalign aligners are removable, comfortable, and can straighten teeth up to two times faster than traditional metal braces.
